On Shelf Avalibility in Asia Pacific

ECR Asia Pacific announces today the publication of On Shelf Availability in Asia Pacific
Retailers and Manufacturers in APAC are realizing the importance of On Shelf Availability (OSA) in an industry where vertical integration is limited, and parties have to rely on each other to achieve their respective goals. This goal is now a common one: shopper and consumer satisfaction, which can only be achieved by ensuring high levels of collaboration and adopting a common methodology to approaching issues.
Over 2011 and 2012, 51 manufacturers and retailers from 14 different countries participated in the first ECR APAC wide On-Shelf Availability survey, investigating the perception of OSA within APAC as well as the critical success factors and key barriers to reducing out of stocks. The outcomes of the survey combined with insights from a series of 1on1 interviews were the basis of the ECR APAC OSA report which outlines the key findings and the future agenda for change.

ECR Europe 2012 Conference: What's next

At our conference in May, the new ECR Europe co-chairs will adopt a rather more fact-based approach when they consider the not-so-small matter of our industry’s future.

RTI Baltic Standard proposal (Dimensions of 3 crates set for Dairy produce)

Since 2007 Manufacturers and Retailers have been trying to come to agreement on unification and pooling of returnable transport items within ECR Baltic (Efficient Consumer Response Initiative in the Baltic States) framework. The current economic situation simply forces us to maintain and develop our supply chain in a sustainable and cost effective way.

Thus according to September – December 2011 RTI (Returnable Transport Items) Initiative meetings in Riga and Vilnius with participation of major retailers (Maxima, Rimi, Palink and Prisma) and dairy/meat manufacturers (Valio, Rakvere, Valmieras Piens, Rīgas piena kombināts, Rīgas piensaimnieks, Pieno Zvaigzdes, Zemaitijos Pienas) it was decided to start unification with dairy produce categories by implementing 3 crates set for standardization of dairy produce followed by crates set for meat, bakery, fruits and vegetables. As a second step towards unification is to agree on dimensions of proposed “Baltic Standard for Returnable Transport Items” followed by examining business models and tendering potential solution providers for specific crates solutions, pool and RTI management services.

ECR Hellas: Out Of Shelf Prevention Workshop

On-shelf availability has been a major concern for FMCG companies for several years now. Initial approaches have tried to quantify and understand the size of the problem, while other efforts have tried to efficiently respond to out-of-shelf (OOS) situations. Yet, there is no empirical evidence on approaches trying to prevent OOS from happening. In this presentation we present the results of a two-years pilot study conducted in Greece providing practical guidelines and empirical evidence on out-of-shelf prevention. Based on hourly POS data and updated information on store inventory, a system utilizing advanced analysis techniques was put in place to alert store personnel in case of an imminent out-of-shelf situation. Pilot results suggest that out-of-shelf could be prevented in 60% of the cases, either by proposing timely orders or by alerting the store personnel in case of an unexpected shelf sale within the last hour. The system was evaluated in three rounds, based on on-shelf availability measurements and other information, for ten major product categories.

On 23rd of November 2011, ECR Hellas is organising a 2 hours workshop regarding the results of Out Of Shelf Prevention project for its companies members.

TCGF Press Release - Consumer Goods companies release first global measurement system for packaging sustainability

PARIS, September 6 2011. The Consumer Goods Forum today announced the release of the Global Protocol on Packaging Sustainability (GPPS) to enable the consumer goods industry to better assess the relative sustainability of packaging.

The GPPS is part of the sustainability work stream at the Consumer Goods Forum, which is sponsored by two of the organisation's board members: Philip Clarke, CEO of Tesco and Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever.

Commenting on today's release, Philip Clarke said: “Tesco is a responsible retailer and understands that packaging is important to its customers. We're working hard with our suppliers to minimise the impact of our packaging on the environment. Having a common language will allow us to have the right conversations with our diverse supply chain. We can then work with suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of packaging whilst making sure it still does the essential job it needs to do to protect the products we sell.”

Paul Polman added: “One of the strengths of this project is how it has brought together so many companies and organizations from across our industry to work collectively on developing this common language. Now we need to put the language to work. We are already doing so in Unilever and we are seeing the benefit.”
